Looking Inside Our Pool

Swimming Benefits

Everyone knows dogs love a good swim, but did you also know there are wonderful health benefits of dogs swimming? Swimming is a low impact exercise that not only improves the general health of humans but also of our beloved, canine companions. We’ve gathered together a list of just a few of the ways your dog’s health can improve by swimming. As with any new activity, we encourage you to speak to your veterinarian before starting your dog on a new exercise routine.

Weight  Loss

More than half the dogs in the U.S. are overweight, with swimming working off those extra treats has never been so much fun!

Cardiovascular  Health

Swimming improves heart strength, heart rate, blood pressure and lung proficiency thru low impact, aerobic exercise.

Stress  and  Pain  Relief

Swimming is a therapeutic exercise that relieves stress and pain. It can be especially good for seniors with joint pain and other age-related concerns.

Slow  Their  Roll

Swimming burns away that pent up energy in the most refreshing way and can help curb excessive barking or destructive behavior.

Cool  Down

A dip in our doggie swimming pool is the perfect way to cool off on scorching Roanoke summer days.

Playtime  and  Bonding

The most obvious benefit is joy. Most dogs are natural swimmers and love playtime in the water.

NATURAL SWIMMER?     TEACHABLE SWIMMER?     NON-SWIMMER?

Regardless of your dog’s swimming abilities they can swim at the City Dogs Dog Pool! We have, and will require the use of, dog life vests to ensure your pup is safe in our pool.  Once our program is underway, dogs that have been evaluated / taught and are strong, proven swimmers may be allowed to swim without a vest at the request of the owner. No more than 5 dogs of the same size will be allowed in the pool at any one time.  Supervision is constant and careful.

Breeds like Labradors, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Irish Water Spaniels, Portuguese Water Dogs, Standard Poodles and even the giant Newfoundland tend to be natural swimmers. They have longer legs and webbed feet that help propel them thru water. Their longer snouts allow them to keep their heads lower to the water, requiring less effort to breathe.

Dogs That Swim Naturally
Dogs Easily Taught to Swim

Some breeds of dogs are not natural swimmers but when taught and acclimated they enthusiastically embrace the water. These include Basset Hounds, Corgis, Dachshunds, Shih Tzus and many mixed breed dogs.

For certain breeds, swimming does not come naturally at all. Breeds with shorter muzzles like Bulldogs, Boxers, Pekinese, Pugs and Boston Terriers actually have to lift their heads out of the water further in order to breathe. When they lift their heads, their rear sinks down and they are unable to float. These breeds require a life jacket and need to be closely monitored. We prefer these pups bring their own personal life vest – preferably one with a front head rest – to ensure proper fit and safety.
